Great Night at Yoshi’s!

YoshisAHS Jazz Lab, Jazz Band and Rhythm Bound put on a great show at Yoshi’s in Oakland on Monday, February 10th. Under the direction of Craig Bryant, the students entertained an enthusiastic crowd, performing jazz and R&B classics by such greats as Sonny Rollins, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Stevie Wonder and Sly & The Family Stone. Guest artist and AHS alum Julian Le sat in with both Jazz Lab and Jazz Band, inspiring the students and wowing the audience with his piano skills, not to mention joining a terrific “battle on the keys” with Jazz Band pianist Jack Bastian. (Find out more about Julian and get his latest CD on his website here). The Rhythm Bound R&B group closed out the night in style with a fun set featuring both great music and some entertaining costuming and choreography from the kids. All in all, it was a fun evening that gave our students a chance to play in a top venue while raising important funds for our music programs. Thanks to all the instrumental musicians and singers, to Mr. Bryant and all the teachers who supported the students, to Susan Fong and other volunteers who helped organize the event, and to everyone who turned out to see the show!
